Purpose of The Book

To connect readers with the craftsmen and craftswomen behind Egypt’s traditional handmade crafts, offering insight into their backgrounds, workshops, working methods, sources of inspiration, challenges, and aspirations. In doing so, we aim to reduce reliance on product distribution points—which are often overpriced—and re-establish a direct connection between buyers/enthusiasts and the source of the craft itself.

To dissect the working process of each craftsman and woman, and to shed light on deeply rooted creative design practices that have existed for generations—practices that transcend Eurocentric constraints often present in contemporary design education and discourse in Egypt.

More importantly, to strengthen the ties between creatives and craft makers in ways that go beyond fleeting acknowledgments or minimal credits. Through broad, meaningful collaborations, we draw from a deeply embedded craft—not merely adapting it to fit our design identity, but building on its cultural richness to enhance our creative processes. In return, this exchange must be purposeful—just as we benefit, so too must the craft and its makers. In doing so, we extend the life of traditional crafts that are on the verge of extinction.

توصيلُ القُرّاء إلى الحِرفيّين والحِرفيّات وراء الحِرَف اليدويّة المصريّة، والتعرّفُ على خلفيّاتهم، وورشِهم، وأساليبِ عملهم، ومصادرِ إلهامهم، وتحدّياتهم، وطموحاتهم. وبذلك، نُقَلِّلُ الاعتمادَ على نِقاط توزيعِ المنتجات، التي تكون غالبًا باهظةَ الثمن، ونُعيدُ ربطَ المُشترين والمُهتمّين بمصدرِ الحِرفةِ نفسه.

تحليلُ مسارِ العملِ لكلِّ حِرفيٍّ وحِرفيّةٍ وفنّان/ـةٍ محلّي، والكشفُ عن أساليبِ التصميمِ الإبداعيّة المُتجذّرة، التي وُجِدت منذ زمنٍ بعيد، والتي تتجاوزُ القيودَ الأوروبيّةَ المركزيّة في الخطابِ المعاصرِ لتعليمِ التصميمِ ونقاشاتِه في مصر.

والأهمّ من ذلك، تعزيزُ الروابطِ بين المُبدعين والحِرفيّين بما يتجاوزُ الإشاداتِ العابرة أو الإشاراتِ الفنيّةَ المحدودة. فمِن خلال إرساءِ تعاوناتٍ واسعةِ النطاق، نستفيدُ من حِرفةٍ مُتجذّرةٍ بعمق. لا نكتفي بتكييفها لتناسبَ هُويّتنا التصميميّة، بل نبني على ثرائها الثقافيّ لتعزيزِ عمليّتنا الإبداعيّة. وفي المُقابل، يجب أن يكون هذا التبادلُ هادفًا. فكما نستفيد، يجب أن تستفيدَ الحِرفةُ وصُنّاعُها. وبهذا، نُطيلُ عمرَ الحِرفةِ التقليديّةِ التي باتت على حافّة الاندثار.

Disclaimer

This project features 34 craftsmen, craftswomen, workshops, and institutions from across Egypt. In its first volume, “Artisan Craftsmen” introduces 24 of them. They generously shared their time, stories, and spaces with us, offering a glimpse into their work, inspirations, and life experiences. All featured craftsmen and women have given their consent to appear in this book, with their real names, words, and photographs. All photos were taken and interviews recorded with their permission.

The project is still ongoing, and we aspire to reach more craftsmen and women across different governorates to learn from and about them. We are deeply grateful to everyone we met along this journey, including those who preferred not to appear in this book. Their stories and experiences continue to inspire us, and we look forward to expanding this project to include more talented makers and artists in the future. This project is built upon—and made possible by—the trust and relationships that emerged during our research journey. We are proud of what we’ve achieved so far.

يَضمّ هذا المشروع ٣٤ حرفيًّا، حرفيّة، ورشةً، ومؤسّسةً من مصر. يُشارككم (الفنيين الحرفيين) في جزئه الأول ٢٤ منهم. لقد شاركونا وقتهم، وقصصهم، ومِساحاتهم ليُعطونا فكرةً عن أعمالهم، وإلهامهم، وتجاربهم الحياتية. وافق جميع الحرفيين والحرفيات المذكورين على ظُهورهم في الكتاب بأسمائهم، وكلماتهم، وصورهم الحقيقية، وقد تمّ التقاط الصور وتسجيل المقابلات بإذنٍ منهم.

المشروع ما زال مُستمرًّا، ونحن نطمح للوصول إلى المزيد من الحرفيين والحرفيات من شتّى أنحاء المُحافظات للتعرّف عليهم والتعلم منهم. نحن مُمتنّون لكل مَن قابلناهم في هذه الرحلة، بما في ذلك أولئك الذين فضّلوا عدم الظهور في هذا الكتاب. هذه القصص والتجارب هي مصدرُ إلهامٍ مستمرٍّ لنا، ونتطلّع إلى توسيع هذا المشروع ليشمل المزيد من الصنّاع والفنّانين المُبدعين في المستقبل. هذا المشروع مبنيٌّ على، ومُكتملٌ بفضل، الثقة والعلاقات التي نشأت خلال رحلة البحث، ونحن فخورون بما حقّقناه حتى الآن.

This book is divided into five sections. From the crafts of our 24 craftsmen and craftswomen, specific ones appear in each section. Moreover, this book does not contain page numbers. Instead, navigation through its pages relies on the numbers and colors assigned to each craftsman and craftswoman, which remain consistent throughout all sections of the book.

هذا الكتاب مكون من خمسة أجزاء. من بين الحِرَف التي يُقدّمها ٢٤ حرفيًّا وحرفيّة في هذا الكتاب، يظهر بعضهم في أقسام معيّنة دون غيرها. لا يحتوي هذا الكتاب على أرقام للصفحات، بل يعتمد التنقّل بين صفحاته على أرقام وألوان مُخصّصة لكلّ حرفي وحرفيّة، وهي ثابتة في جميع أقسام الكتاب.

Artisanal Craftsmen was showcased at the 2025 Applied Arts Pre-Masters Exhibition at the GUC, alongside other publications from Koshk Kairo—the collaborative project bringing together all the exhibited works and designed materials under the supervision of Ryan Grees. The book was displayed together with the Archief Kairo website designed by @salmafayez, which features a comprehensive database and gallery of the interviewed craftsmen, craftswomen, and craft institutions.

تم عرض كتاب "الفنيين الحرفيين" ضمن معرض سنة ما قبل الماجستير للفنون التطبيقية لعام ٢٠٢٥ في الجامعة الألمانية بالقاهرة، إلى جانب منشورات أخرى تابعة لمشروع كشك كايرو، وهو المشروع التعاوني الذي جمع كل المنشورات والأعمال المعروضة تحت إشراف ريان غريس. كما عُرض الكتاب إلى جانب موقع أرشيف كايرو من تصميم سلمى فايز، الذي يضم قاعدة بيانات ومعرضًا متكاملًا يحتوي على معلومات وصور للحرفيين والحرفيات والمؤسسات الحرفية التي تمت مقابلتها.
